California North - Kaavadi Poosai and Thai Poosam

In keeping with the Nagarathar tradition, a Kaavadi Poosai was performed on Saturday January 23,2010 in the Concord Shiva Murugan Temple, thanks to the initiative of Solai Alagappan. Our chettiars prepared 12 Kaavadis decorated with Peacock feathers and silk cloth. Once the Kavadis were ready, they were arranged in front of the Vinayagar sannidhi. Then followed Bajanai songs which lasted for more than an hour and was enthusiastically participated in by the large turnout of more than 120 people. This was followed by Aarthi and prasadam. Special mention must be made of the delicious Poosai Saappadu, prepared by our aachis, consisting of Kesari, Idly, Vadai, Pongal, Sambar and chutney. It was an evening to remember and we hope to maintain this tradition in the years to come.

Thai Poosam was celebrated in the Concord Shiva Murugan temple on Sunday, January 31, 2010. The event was sponsored, as usual, by Ravi & Meena Annamalai. The prepared Kaavadis were placed in front of the temple and the devotees sang songs in praise of Lord Muruga. After that the Kaavadis and Paalkudams were carried in a procession into the temple and around the sami sannithanam. Then followed Murugan abishegam , alangaram, aarthi and prasadam. The Raja alangaram of Lord Muruga and the poojas were beautifully done by the dedicated and untiring team of priests-Anand, Viswanathan and Sathish Balaji. The large gathering of devotees was then treated to some enchanting songs, rendered by Asha Ramesh and her group. The afternoon program consisted of Murugan Thirkkalyanam, followed by Aarthi and prasadam. Those who attended the day’s activities, returned home, filled with the blessings of Lord Muruga.
